Hello mylayoutisho,

That's a broad question. The short answer, for a beginner, is to follow tried-and-true methods that have proven successful over the years.

There's not enough space, or time, for me to go into much detail on either. I recommend getting some Kalmbach books on these topics.

For tunnels I'd get a copy of How to Build Realistic Model Railroad Scenery and A Realistic HO Layout for Beginners. For bridges you'll need Model Railroad Bridges & Trestles. You can order these books online by clicking on the Model Railroader store link in the upper lefthand of the Model Railroader home page.

I also recommend perusing the Model Train Magazine Index (there's a link at the top of this page) for references to articles on these topics. You can order available back issues of Model Railroader or photo copies of articles from back issues no longer available online from Customer Sales & Service as well.

This should get you started on the right foot.
