I was so positive this name would generate an "already-in-use" error message, but - surprise, surprise - it didn't! If I could do it all again I would choose the name "prometheus" because I'm a pyromaniac and I love steel mills (esp. the hot-metal processing part). But I'm with tWhite, I don't want to lose any of the pretty little stars below my name...

(Why am I always dead last in these things?) "ValorStorm" is a short story I submitted to the "Strange New Worlds" contest in 1998. I was... not among the winners. It's a great story, and I've posted it permanently on my web site. Go read it, NOW!

One of the contest rules was that nothing in the Star Trek "bible" could be changed in the short story submissions. I didn't actually replace the Starship Enterprise with the Starship ValorStorm, but I don't think the judges bothered to read that far.

Since then my web site title, its URL, my email, and nearly all my user names are ValorStorm. It just felt like a cool name for an ancient starship. I coined it myself.

All very rational explanations. I wanted to use my first name, Andy, but of course it was taken. I already had Andy typed in so I remembered an episode when I was a teenager. I was picking apples with a crew of guys from Jamaica, lots of singing and joking going on. I told a joke that got everybody going and one of the Jamaican guys said, "Awww, Andy...mon...boy..." I wore that handle for the balance of my teenage years. Strangely enough, now that I'm approaching 50, nobody calls me that anymore. Again, not very trainy but easy to remember. Now was that obscure enough for ya?

And this is a good post, seems like there are quite a few creative folk out there, Then again, when you take 2x4s, plaster, and moss and create a miniature world, I guess thats a given!

WD45 - I took that from my other fascination; antique tractors. It was a 1950's model from Allis-Chalmers, and I began using it on a tractor board, and just use it for everything so I don't have to continually come up with different names.
