Heavy traffic and early signalling systems and night-time - it can be a deadly combination. The use of flares behind the stopped train might have prevented it though - although maybe flares are not in use outside of North America, I don't know.

That is really bad, 127 bodies pulled from it. It's amazing how destructive trains can be.
