On the N "empire"(i like to call it) 80-today. on the HO switching layout we have started 50s-late 60s.

Right around 1965 or so. That's when I graduated from high school, and effectively stopped working on my layout. Those trains are now being brought back to life. The real decision point for me is that I must stay in the "Caboose Era," because to me, a train just isn't a train without one.

Primarily mid 70's to late 80's. The bulk of my locomotives are Chessie or B&0, C&O, and WM. I have several more modern units also.

I model the diesel era, from the early F units to the present day - modern SD90's and AC4400's.

I model about 1975 to the prestnt cause on my c&o railroad there are chessie c&o and csx all at the same time

I model the early 1950's. But 1906 is also attractive.

Transition era. Had it not been for the kindness of one of our regulars on this forum, though, I'd still have no early diesels. Now, I have a Hudson, 0-6-0, and FA2/FB2 units.

I have to agree with a couple of you, although I try to stick with the 50's era as much as posible, I do have some modern day equipment running on my railroad.

I AGREE! I cannot claim to any one era. Sure, it takes place in the present day, but I guess it would be a different dimension, because I have steam, running with diesel, running with turbines, from all eras, and all locations. Sure, one day I may assign myself a certain era, but now, the Scott Squad Railroad runs anything and everything.

I took 1941- 1965 even though I try to find the earliest diesel available and would run nothing but steam if I could afford it. Being from the mid-west USA I want to see cattle cars, grain & coal. By 65 most if not all of the cattle cars were go and am not really sure when the covered grain hoppers became popular but this era seems to be my best chance of getting all I want together realistically. Did I mention passenger service? Yeah, I want that to.

For my home layout, I voted golden steam era, but extended into the 50's. I'm only into the armchair planning-dreaming stage at present waiting for the time and funds to start it. However at my club we model every era I guess as we've run everything imaginable on it, Ken

All of my stuff thus far is 1990-present. I grew up with modern day stuff. Never saw steam in action, and frankly don't find it very interesting at all. Speaks for my generation though, we are lazy and don't like to do extra work. So crews on steam locomotives are to hard working.

It's more that I just like the look of modern day diesels and all the freight cars "tagged" as some call it.

NYC during the 50's. Mainly Diesel but with a few Steam (BLI Hudson, Genesis 2-8-2). Just finished my west bound main loop today. Get to run roundy roundy now while I finish up the rest of the layout. I can almost see the light at the end of the tunnel.

We've had this poll a couple of times before, but it's always good to revive it for people who have joined the forum recently. I model 1940-53, but the diesels haven't started hitting my layout, yet. All steam and a lot of BIG steam. That's what I grew up with, that's what I prefer, LOL!
