Dave: although I model in N scale, I think my experience with ground throws applies--use the sprung caboose industries ground throws, not the rigid. I found the rigid had too long a throw and moved the rails. Almost all the ground throws that I installed were direct connected to the throw bar. I have a double track main line near the front edge of the layout and used brass wire under the outer main to throw turnouts on the inner main. Hope that helps.

It shouldn't make much of a difference if you use music wire to make your hook up. Take a look at the NMRA Beginner's Pages where there is an article on installing Caboose Industries Ground Throws on Atlas turnouts. It's under Let's Build Trackwork, Install a Ground Throw - Intermediate to Advanced.
