I use a Logic Rail 'Block Animator' system. It uses photo cells, and protects a railroad crossing(diamond) with working semaphore signals. The system works very nice, and was only about $40, plus the cost of the signals. I model a Milwaukee Road secondary line and really have no need for a full block signal system. Control is DCC, and there are no cab control block toggles. What I have is fully automatic, and simulates a 'automatic crossing' quite nicely!

O.K.... Here's a question for anyone that has multiple blocks on your layout and that runs more than two blocks at a time.
Do you use a simple block signal method or one that uses all sorts of circuitry ?
A working block occupancy signal that I use indicates red and yellow for a main track block in use and a green light for the track not in use. These aspects are controlled from the block selector switch that I turn on or off and the power comes right off the track.
Just curious about who uses what ?
