Aggro:

I have a Sony Cybershot 5 megapixel camera. They are not that expensive. I think 5 megapixel will be enough for your need.

This example tells you what you can do with a 5 megapixel camera.

My camera generates pictures of the following size.

2592 pixels width x 1944 pixels height. That is 72 dpi and that's not enough for magazines (only good for webpages). But if you make the picture smaller the resolution gets higher. This is very easy to calculate in Photoshop. I just set the resolution to 300 (good for most magazines) and Photoshop tells me the maximum size. And that is:

21,95 cm width x 16,46 cm height.

So that's the biggest picture you can have at a resolution of 300.

If you want bigger pictures you must have more megapixels.

Half the size of the picture will double the resolution. That's the rule.

You can also lower the resolution to make your picture bigger but that will make your picture a lower quality, and you don't want to do that.

There has got to be SOME digital cambra out there that meets the publication needs that is somwhat affordable.
The art director Tom D. said at full size, the photos I sent him from my Sony 3.1 mp cambra can be blown up to fill 2 magasine columns max.
I need a little more depth of field and higher mega pixel count.
Mabey a HIGHER LEVEL Sony Cyber-shot will do. The search is on.

I really wonder who voted *no* in this poll. [(-D]

Sounds like a good idea to me, if Aggro is willing to do an article there must be somebody with a good quality camera who can take the pictures for him, i took some for a friends article here in the UK, they were good for small magazine pictures of about 4" x 4", but you will nead at least 8MP for full page pictures,

Hey Aggro, how about starting with sending a few pics in for Trackside Photos? I'm sure you could find someone with a decent camera. You need 8Mp in digital, but a good ol 35mm slide film is about 200Mp or something. Take a couple of slides on good film and I bet you get published.

I feel I should apologize as well for the forcefulness of this poll, it was partially my idea, but like I said before;

Go go Aggro, it's your birthday, yeah yeah, go Aggro!

I voted YES!

Aggro is very good at what he does, and we all need pros like him to learn from. I'm 100% sure you will get your article published if you send some photos as well.

When they see what you can do, they will publish it!

Keep up the good work Aggro!

I'd like to see it happen--here's a guy that shares just about all of his technique expertise with the rest of us on the forum. I think he deserves a MUCH wider audience, and frankly, if I were MR magazine, I'd be jumping at the chance to publish one of his articles.
Go, Aggro!!

Ya know, I've been thinking about this. Aggro could weather all my stuff for the article. He's probably out of steamers to do anyway. [:D]

If well written and accompanied by some high quality photos, I bet the MR staff would get your article published in a heartbeat. It would be an extensive undertaking though.

When i wrote it I did not mean for it to sound as if i was pressuring Aggro to write an article, I meant it like selector said...would you like to see an article...I just did not write it correctly. My appologies.

To those who responded with the caveat that Aggro might feel unduly pressed if we use the word "should", I agree. He should not do anything that he doesn't want to, or that he can't do for practical reasons. I am sure I speak for everyone who responded in the affirmative that none of us intended any imposition., but merely a hope.

Perhaps the question ought to be rephrased: "Would you like to see an article in MR on locomotive weathering? If so, please indicate who would be your choice of authors, or co-authors, assuming those individuals consent?

maybe some day we will see an article. Good luck when you can afford an 8MP camara and when you decide to write an article let us know about it.

I'd be more than happy to do that. One problem is stretching material out enough to cover however many pages the article needs to be. The other problem is finacial. You need a cambra good enough to take pictures that will be blown up across 1 or 2 pages. I think Fugate said 8 MP or somthing. It'll be awhile before I can afford a fancy cambra.

After pitching the concept of my potential article to Terry Thompson, he said it sounded intresting and he'd really concider it, but he can't promise the mag will buy it. I should've sent some pictures with the inquirey. [banghead]

The editors said I can't use a pseudonym. Real name only.

Ditto.

Writing is very hard work. I would not want to pressure anyone into a project like that. Aggro was kind enough to post his weathering method for us. We should not push him into something he that he may have no intrest or desire to do.

[#ditto] I think Aggro does a fine job, but leave it up to him. Writing though could be a good career move if he likes it. J.R.

Aggro's weathering technique is one of the best I've ever seen. If he feels like writing about that and his other scenery techniques, that is his choice. I, for one, am grateful for his posts and photos here. Inspiring, to say the least!

Would love to see not only a how-to article on the weathering ( I swear I can SMELL the rust on those loco wheels ) but also the layout on which they all live.-We`ve seen the trees, can`t imagine the rest would be of a lesser standard. If "yer man" is not comfortable with writing an article,I`m sure the M.R. team could assist-it`s part of what they`re there for. As to the Nom-de-Plume,protection against jealousy crazed 3rd raters such as myself.....? keep it up aggro, you`re raising the bar for us all, regards, nick

Writing a polished article is hard work. I would not put that on anyone who did not have that in mind to begin with.

Once again, other would have been nice in the poll. Or only if he wants to.

I am a fan, and anyone who can do that AND make nearly free trees as good as his look gets my vote. [tup] Now, would the editors allow him a pseudonym, or would we find out his real name? [}:)][:O][:D]

Go go, go Aggro, it's your birthday, yeah yeah, go Aggro[:p][:D]

Your weathering is simply superb, and is definite MODEL RAILROADER material. Your article would be a big hit with everyone who needs pointers and explanations of how to weather a hard working steam locomotive.

Any guys from MR reading this?
