One of the keynotes of the 1870's was link and pin couplers. I have a web article detailing my attempt to make an operating link and pin coupler system for my OO scale 1870's layout at:

Here is the beta operating version of the system. The drawbars have been finalized and the tab is clear tape:

When did the railroads move to knuckle couplers?

The Master Car Builders Association chose the Janney knuckle coupler in 1887 as standard. The Safety Appliance Act of 1893 mandated it's use in 1893.
I find that every major railroad technology step creates a economic depression when the old equipment becomes obsolete. There was a major "panic" in 1893, the banks having to eat the capital of old railroad cars. Maybe it is just a coincidence.

Here is the draw bar. I can carve one out of ABS in about 15 minutes.

Have you tried using a ferrous (magnetic) metal for the pin, where you could use a magnet on a stick to lift it?

Jeff that was my first thought.. There is no control over the pin with the magnet. The clear tape tab works and it is not that obtrusive.
