I now have two in my possession and I see exactly why I don't need a detailing kit these loco are very nice. I notice a difference between the top details on them, love the variation. Has anyone else notice this difference? How many variations are there?

I've just receive two soundtraxx sound decoders, I haven't installed them yet though. I'm very busy with the layout… both layouts (N & HO).

QUOTE: I don't think you need a super detail kit for this engine. It has brass quality detail right out of the box! Have fun with it! Its a great little engine.

I totally agree!! You don't need to detail that!! It's already detailed enough. Besides, its got brass quality as stated above by "CrazyShay."

I've had mine about three weeks. I concur with everyone else. It's a really fine piece. I installed the Soundtraxx decoder in mine the second day I had it. Like everyone else says, the sound is a little weak. I turned the air pump and bell volumes down, and that made it better. The air pump and bell both drowned out the exhaust chuff. We just can't have that. Let me know what you plan to do fot the coal load. I modified mine to reuse. Soundtraxx intends on you coming up with something different, because the speaker fits in the bunker, and the factory coal load won't fit anymore. I'll post some pictures of what I did with mine, if you'd like to see them....AND if I can ever out how to post them.

hey verse2damax , welcome to the spectrum shay owners club [:)]
i think the soundtraxx decoder is the only one that will fit , and it's supposed to be a pretty easy install . which i'll find out if my LHS ever gets mine in . been waiting almost 2 months . sometimes i really hate living in canada and trying to support my LHS

Oh really! That's great news CrazyShay. With that in mind I'll now turn my attention to sound. What's the best sound unit that I can get for this loco?
and, where?
This is part of a christmas project that I'm going to be working on for my office. I'm a graphic designer and I also specialize in models. I've recently opened this business in a mall and I'm working on a highly detailed store front layout which I've already started and this engine is going to be one of three featured locos. This is a venture to generate some awareness and you guessed it, a buzz.

The only drawback to the SoundTraxx decoder is that the speaker has to be so small to fit into the Shay that the volume is very weak.
The same holds true for the speaker provided with the decoder for a Con-Cor Galloping Goose.

Where can I get one of the SoundTraxx decoder to buy? I'm afraid it's gonna have to do for now.

Just for laughs I went to ebay : 2-truck brass shay=$650.00, 3-truck brass shay=$325.00, 3-truck brass shay=$280.00. You can be assured that these prices will probably double before they are sold.

The only "super detail" I have ever heard of for this locomotive is the SoundTraxx sound decoder. The locomotive already has excellent detail, and the 3 I have all run a smooth as Swiss watches.

The only drawback to the SoundTraxx decoder is that the speaker has to be so small to fit into the Shay that the volume is very weak.

The same holds true for the speaker provided with the decoder for a Con-Cor Galloping Goose.

Yes, the rear tender is longer, with two trucks. Check out this site for more info on geared locos: http://www.trainweb.org/gearedsteam/

Three trucks. The operating machinery is the second from the right, it's not a truck.
