What's your favorite Amtrak phase ?...
Posted by Anonymous on Saturday, June 4, 2005 3:25 AM
For those of you that have been keeping up with me over the last couple of months, you know that I've become a big Amtrak fan.
Of the five phases Amtrak has been through since its birth in May of 1971, I personally like phase III most of all. It's the one with the red, white and blue strips running along the sides of their engines and cars.

So what's your favorite phase (if any) ?.

Phase 5, the whole thing goes well with the freshly painted Genises they have, makes the whole train "come together".

Phase V here as well.
Not too keen on the Amtrak F40's unless they were painted all silver with maybe small stripes along the flanks.

See, it's hard to say.

I started off riding Amtrak when it was strictly phase III accross the board and I loved it. You also left out phase IVb. This has a slightly different blue hue than the phase IV design but is generally the same except for the "three sheets to the wind" logo.

I like phase V the best on AMD-103s. I love the viewliners in phase IV and Amfleets seem to look great in phase IVb. I like everything else in phase III.

My vote for Amtrack wasn't listed! it is Pre! I prefer the great old streamliners in all their colorful glory! I model the GN Empire Builder and if I decide to do Beiber interchange I may invent a reason for a meet at Keddie with the California Zephyr! Like a massive snow block in Montana, or ?

Not being an Amtrak modeler, I've got a stupid question. Is Phase 1 when they were bunching all of the older railroad passenger cars together? Like when I rode the Coast Starlight and spent the entire ride in a Vista-Dome car off one of the old Burlington Zephyr trains? That was cool, the trains were really Technicolor, and as I remember, SP wasn't side-tracking us for every slow freight between Sacramento and Portland (unlike the present owner). Anyway, that's the phase I liked.

Phase I had personality. The first Amtrak E8/9's painted with the bloody nose and still had a mix of all kinds of colors. Santa Fe, SP Penn Central , GN, BN, NP cars mixed with the first Amtraks. Loco's from the GG1, E7, F7, E8/9, etc etc. were all over the place. Many of them were still in near original paint mixed with Amtrak painted power.

Phase 1 in all its glory. The broken arrow logo, bloody nose SDP40, F and E units mixed in with their former owner colors and their colorful consists are a memorable sight.
