A question for all of those who model Union Pacifi

Hi all!!

I would like to ask just how many of you actually like UP's new scheme? So far I have talked to two people on the net and am in agreeance with them that UP should re-evaluate their decision! I mean, the 'Flag' scheme looks OK... if it was just on a certain batch of loco's(Just SD70M's or something). But putting it on every loco you can get your hot little hands on is going to make things very boring!! One of the people that I spoke to said that the scheme (for him) had already become boring!

I think if UP had left the billboard lettering on and put only a small flag on underneath it... then it would look really good! But in my opinion they have wrecked what was the best scheme ever. WHY FIX SOMETHING IF IT IS NOT BROKE!!!

I love the UP and model it in the Summer of 1996(Thank God!)but the thing that is scaring me is that in a couple of years time all model factories, when they bring out new models of UP loco's are going to only do this FLAG scheme!! I can paint my own....but of late am not finding the time!

Do not forget, people, that all UP locomotives that come in for either a service or overhaul, will now be painted into this scheme.

So tell me ...am I panicing for nothing and do you think that KATO,ATLAS and all the others will still bring loco's out in the old scheme?

I would love to here some imput on this subject from you lovely people...exspecially from the staff of MODEL RAILROADER.( If you are not too busy). Maybe someone could allay my fears!

Thanks.

I am currently modeling my first layout, which is Union Pacific freight yard. I grew up in Nebraska so it will be a mix of Fremont and Kearney. Get on Union Pacific .com for inspiration.

OK first of all I do think you are panicing over nothing.

I don't think the new paint scheme is boring at all. I have noticed one thing however, with railroads, and that being that everything boils down to MONEY!

As soon as somebody new is hired or is moved into a position where they have any say they will look at figures and get out the red marker and start cutting. Especially with the economy as soft as it is now.

Give it time, sure they say this will be on "Every Locomotive" now but in a couple months or a couple of years things can change quite dramatically.

And as far as model producing goes, these new paint schemes just give the producers a larger market to sell to. The way it is right now there are acouple of diesels that could be brought out in two or three different paint schemes. That really can increase a market to the right people, and to people like me it may be the right diesel but the wrong scheme, oh well, I'll buy it anyway. After all you'd be surprised what a pencil eraser, some paint and a few appropriate decals can do.

I love it and would like to see more! I would bet that you'll see models offered in both schemes so we can collect them all. (And spend more money).

Not to be un-patriotic, but I really think the UP could have done something a bit less "dramatic" to thier traditional 'Armour Yellow" paint scheme.
I hope, (as evidenced by other models available in differnt paint schemes) that, say, Kato, Atheran, Bachmann, etc... will give modelers more of a choice between the two designs. I'd call the new scheme a little too much of a good thing..

It's not like they painted the engine Emerald green and slaped on flaming scalops on the side!! Yea it's a bit drastic compared to the typical scheam, but a verry drastic event happened on 9/11. Isn't UP theme "Building A Nation"? After all they pretty much built the union west of Chicago!! So it's no suprise when they slap the largest flag they could fit on the side of there engines to show that they are there for us. (But PLEASE dont re-paint the CNW engines!! those are rare enough!!)
