I'm at the stage now that blue prints or diagrams (with dimensions) of structures would be a great asset. I have enjoyed building kits of houses and small structures but I know I could easily do it myself at a fraction of the cost if I had blue prints or diagrams and some photos.

Depends on what I am doing. If I am building from scratch for a specific car or structure then I need a drawing of a known scale for measurements and placement of parts. If I'm freelancing then a picture for inspiration is enough. If I'm building a kit or buying RTR then I don't need them unless I want to modify the kit to a different specific prototype then I do need them.
Enjoy

I'd say "vital", but I'm in that small, 10% or so, minority who actually build things from scratch.
