My recollection is that Lionel starting using plastic bodies shortly after WWII. My guess is around 1947 or so. My earliest Lionel catalog is from 1951 and they were clearly using plastic at that time. I have a 1946 American Flyer catalog and the cars in that catalog all appear to be made from metal.

can anyone give me a breif history of linel trains. like what year they went to plastic bodys ?
