Carl;
It is your choice. A heavily used, well maintained yard will be ballasted. A poorly maintained, less used yard with have weeds, even trees growing. And there is the heavily used, not maintained which will have lots of weeds, but not close to the rails where oil and sand fall on them.

Hi Guys,,
I had a question, in my yard ,should i ballast the tracks ,or use dirt grass over the ties,,i would love to know what some of you guys are doing ,in the yards?? i know you do want to have ballast on the main lines ,thats a given ,,
