Help w/bending handrails?
Posted by Anonymous on Saturday, October 19, 2002 9:23 AM
I need advice on how to bend handrails to fit Smokey Valley sanctions on an Athearn SD40T-2, especially the more difficult ones with mutiple bends. Any advice would be appreciated.

a jeweller's plier, or a Kadee coupler adjusting plier might be just what the doctor ordered.

and time, and practice, and plenty of wire!
After many years of practice[32!] I still have to scrap a few until I get it right. Keeping the flat bits flat and the bends in the right place and on the right plane are the biggest bug-bears.
Persevere until you get one right and remember, you can't see both sides of the loco at the same time when it's on the layout or running past!
Good-luck, Dave.

I use a set of needle-nose plyers. If you have an identical unit (another SD40T-2) with complete handrails, remove the handrails from the unit and use them as the template. Starting on one end and follow the angles of the template as you go.
