I've picked one up for surgery. It will get a custom cab built onto one end and a new set of Brill streetcar trucks under it.It will become an electric rail crane for tie and track maintenance( It will sit in the yard outside mt streetcar barns) If I get really ambitious i mat power it with a nwsl flea drive but until then it will be a pretty parked piece of mow equipment. I think some may be mistaking what a derick car is - a flat car with a small boom on it, probably manually operated. I saw one of the new Athean RTR ones at the LHS recently. Way to pricey for what you get, I think around $28.00 Canadian.

A rail crane like the Athearn or Walthers 250 ton model would be used to clear wrecks. There are smaller 35-60 ton self powered cranes with long booms for MOW and construction work. Some can be fitted with pile driving equipment. I've modeled many of them as MOW stuff is one of my main interests. See photos of my roster on my website in the link at the bottom.

I use mine for trainwrecks! Though it has been very idle as of late.

There was an article in MR some time ago, which showed a scene on someone's layout. The scene was that of a construction crew building a new bridge using Derrick cars and using temporary track as a detour. LOts of MOW equipment in the scene. It was very well done.

It would probably used for any number of MOW activities, from picking up an laying rail to dropping off ties, supplies, signal boxes, equipment, etc. It would be a part of a MOW train in normal use. Just my shot at it.

Hey Fellas. I picked up an N&W derrick car on Saturday at my LHS. I was wondering what it was used for? I was thinking of putting a speeder on it for my Railroads Road forman of the MOW crew. Or an other possiablity would have it sitting on a siding with another flat full of wheelsets. What have you guys used your Derrick flat for? Thanks Kevin
