Airbrushing

Hi there

I am going to get an airbrush but i am unsure what to get. I have located this at an affordable price but i am unsure whether it is an airbrush because it is labbeled as a spray gun. Is this what i need? Is it an airbrush? I am painting basic loco coats but nothing to complex.As long as it gives a nice even paint job im happy.

My eyes aren't the best, but that appears to be a small spray gun. An air brush will not be labelled a spray gun. This one may do what you want, but it does not appear to be what is generally referred to as an air brush. A typical even simple air brush has a small mixing chamber area that gives better paint particle atomization before spraying it onto the surface being painted. My advice would be to go to Badger's, Paasche's, and Testor's sites and look at thir products, decide what you want, and then look for the best price on one of those. My further advice would be to get a single action external mix air bru***o start with. When you know what all that means you're ready to buy one. When you get good with a double action internal mix unit, and I mean really good, then you can become a van specialist, too.

I remember that - I got one myself "way back" when I re-entered the hobby and discovered that LHS in my area no longer kept cans of Floquil spray paint in stock. This did the job I needed, which was to completely cover undec locos in C&O Enchantment Blue. I also added some reefer gray to make some first-generation EMDs look 'faded' - I never could do that with the old spray cans!

This is a great 'starter' tool. But if you want to do more sophisticated things like weathering, you will need a 'real' air brush.

I bought myself a Testors Aztek about 10 years ago, because at that time it was the easiest one to clean. I haven't been paying attention to what the other mfgrs (Badger, Paasche, etc.) have been doing, but I've had theirs too.

those are actually spray guns..you really need an "airbrush"..i use a Badger single action airbrush, a two gallon campbell hausfield compressor (you can get them at walmart for about $65- $70,) and you'll also need a regulator with a moisture trap set at about 20 -25 psi and an inline moisture trap cartridge filter... it's about $200 for the entire set up....chuck

I used my Badger 250 for years without complaint. I'll agree it is more a spray gun than an airbrush - but it was a great way to learn the how's of spraying.

I am new to airbrushing and recently got an Aztek with a basic compressor. It is really easy to use, so just jump in and have a go. It is really very satisfying to paint something with an airbrush.
