Who models present day MOW equipment?

In an old Walthers Wish Book, Athearn had two different MOW sets. Did anybody on here buy them, opinions, photos? and does anybody know if Athearn still makes or anybody else makes a complete set (three-five cars) of different MOW equipment? I'm trying to get ideas. HO scale

I just checked the Walters site (www.walthers.com) and did a search for MOW. Lots of items showed up. Good hunting.

Custom Finishing makes tons of MOW equipment, just about every peice of machinery you can imagine, with a couple notable exceptions.

The first would be a SRS railcar, but Walthers made one a couple years ago that shouldn't be too hard to find.

The second would be a work train, but Walthers has you covered there too, but you might have to dig a bit for them.

Third would be large cranes, but there are tons of companies that make cranes from a variety of sources.

Fourth and finally would be large plows, but currently I'm not aware of a company making large plows and blowers, I've been looking for one myself.

I have an old "work train" from the 60's. I checked and could not find a manufacturer label anywhere. I've got a "gray" set. As I recall, there was also a "safety orange" set available at the time. The set has a crane, crane tender, flat car, open "ballast" car, and some windowed box cars labelled kitchen, bunkhouse, etc. Is this the set you're thinking about?

This is actually a subject that really interests me. I spend a lot of time photographing MoW equipment. I have found that most of those MoW sets are not very good for modern MoW. It appears that most MoW equipment requires at least kitbashing if not scratchbuilding. I do like the custom finishing stuff and there are a lot of good ballast cars and side dump cars available.

Also remember that much of the MoW rolling stock is simply converted revenue cars. For example on CSX and NS I often see old Seaboard, C&O, B&O, Chessie, Southern, NW, and Conrail equipment. CSX also uses ex FGE reefers as tool cars.

Do searches for the roadname that you are modeling and see what they use and go from there.
