Check out Narrow Gauge and Short Line Gazette; they have had numerous articles on fixing, adapting, repairing, etc. of brass locos. Sometimes they run a multi-part series on working on a particular model, but the techniques are valid in any scale. Back issues are available.

No books that I've ever seen, but lots of articles in MR, Craftsman and Mainline Modeler. Especially look for the 6-7 issues of RMC with the pseudo-series "steam from kits".

Does anyone out there know of any how to books on working on brass engines, I have been looking but I haven't had any luck.
