Humidity?
Posted by JeremyB on Monday, April 18, 2005 3:48 PM
Hey guys

now the warm weather is here in Canada and the humidity starts up agin I was wondering what is more prone to damage from humidity cork or foam roadbed? I have heard cork can swell up in the damp air is this true?

I think homosote has the most problems with moisture, since it is reconstituted paper.

I live in Indiana and use a dehumidifer in the basement. It doesn't cost much to run.Haven't had any expansion or mold trouble on either cork or foam,it also helps to prevent old magazines from getting moldy.

I had a layout for five or six years with cork roadbed and have never had expansion problems with cork. The wood that it sits on may be a different story. If your track kinks in hot, humid weather you may have to cut some gaps in the rail to account for the wood expanding.

I find the humidity effects my undershorts and I get cranky, more likely to make mistakes on my layout.

Humidity?? here in Alberta there is an enormous lack of it, we sit and listen to the piano splitting into little pieces, layout legs warping, track popping up, glue ungluing, paint drying far too fast, and very, very ,very dry skin and electrical shocks when you touch a light switch. we actually use a couple of humidifiers and gallons of water, winter and summer.

Here in Wales we dont have humidity,or even weather as such-just rain at different temperatures.....a previous layout I built used strips of very dense carpet underlay as roadbed,no problems there( in fact a section of it is incorporated into my current layout) where I have used cork,it`s surplus floor tiles cut to shape, these come ready sealed and seem to be completely stable-you might consider painting a coat of sealant onto the cork before track laying, good luck!,regards, nick
