Imagineered Units
Posted by coborn35 on Sunday, April 17, 2005 12:08 PM
I was just wondering, does anybody ever make imaginerees units, i.e. sd100mac, SW1800 switcher or anything of the sort?

I once bashed a trailer coach for the B-mann N scale doodlebug. This involved cutting two doodlebug shells and butting together the two coach ends.

This left two cab/baggage ends of the doodlebug shell. What to do with those? I cut them a bit and butted the ends together to make a boxcab diesel switcher. I used a B-mann trolley chassis for power. You could also make an electric boxcab switcher in this fashion: just cut off the exhaust stacks and add pantograph, trolley poles or third-rail shoes (unless you want to make a two-power boxcab switcher, then leave the exhaust stacks).

I got the idea from an article in one of these magazines that showed how to do it for the HO doodlebug. It even suggested using the cab/baggage ends to make a boxcab.

I have another pair of shells and this time I will use either a LL FM cab unit chassis or LL FA-1 power chassis (I acquired both of htem for a very good price) as they run much better than the B-mann N scale trolley.

While I haven't done any myself, I believe I've seen an SD-30 that someone made (not just drew a picture of, but built the darn thing), and recently I saw a picture of an N-scaler who put together what appeared to be a GP18/20 top with with switcher trucks, and what looked to be a fuel tank/compressor tank setup from an Alco S2 or something.

I run an Erie-Built which is assumed to have had the powerplant from an F59PH installed in place of the original FM unit - the story goes that spares were unavailable and they were known to be unreliable, so a spare EMD powerplant was bought and fitted. The loco looks identical from the outside but is assumed to have Head-End Power fitted to enable it to work with modern cars (like the bilevels it works with normally).

I have a bunch of computer drawn drawings of "imagineered" locos. I've got FP70s, FP45-2s, F45Bs, F40Bs, SD80M-2s, SD70PHI's, and GP60Fs.

How's this - a wide cab GP-9 in a proposed CP paint scheme that never made it!

I built a strange looking "low rider" loco. I didnt plan for it to ride so low but hey... thats what happens. Its a AC4400 shell setting on top of some cut down SD-45 trucks. All the rest of the modifications were to the drive to make it fit, but they cant be seen. Im still painting the loco, ill post pics soon. Im also going to scratchbuild an engine in the near future, just need to finalize the design.

I have a couple that are based on an F45. The first is the FD45X, this is an Athearn FP45 with a fourth radiator section and fan added to the shell and DD40 trucks. The premise is that EMD took the SD45X concept and put it into a modified FP45 body. Then the thing had traction issues due to the increased horsepower, so DD trucks were added to compensate.

The second unit is my FC80X. This is a pair of F45 shells spliced together like the DD40AX. The frame has 4 sets of 6-axle trucks under it, similar to the N&W Jawn Henry. The premise here is that my road had 25 Jawn Henry style turbines in operation for many years. When they were ready to be retired, EMD was working on the 45 series. My road wanted some large, powerful diesels to replace the turbines, so these units were built as an experiment. They are equipped with a pair of hopped-up SD/F45 engines and -2 prototype electronics.

Good Luck, Morpar

I've got my PA-1 R-Type and DL109 R-Type.

The story behind these is that the Selenian Lines Commission bought the two old Alcos and then conducted an ambitious rebuilding/modernization project in conjunction with Alstom and Bombardier.

The resultant engines look for the most part the same, the PA1 has GE hi-adhesion trucks, the DL109 has new vents and both have shifted roof details (mostly modeled after the P42)

Both started out life as Life-Like models and now have various detail parts added. The final effect looks great.

A lowrider AC4400? That could be waaaay cool. Pimp it out a little, put on some bling, maybe some hydraulics. maybe a hot tub on the roof for gettin' chill with the ladies. Call it Run EMD. [:D]

I can't take any credit for this, It was made by Bill Pearson who owns my LHS, Iron Horse Hobbies, he has a wicked sense of humour.
