Shane's Spctrum 2-8-0 arrived today and he just happened to be in the store for the unveiling. He said, "Wow!"

The road name is N C and ST L , The Dixie Line (I figured out the St Louis part.) I didn't care because I was going to paint it Hogwarts. Now he want's me to, "Leave it dark."

The real test will be tonight. If it makes it around the track without derailing he'll be hocked. I don't want to think what will happen if i doesn't.

Where's the smiley for crossed fingers.

Don, I learned my lesson on that one, but just can't be done this track. When I build the bigger one ther will not be any. Will you cross you fingers anyway?

The S curves are in the trunouts.

RE: YOUR PHOTO. I saw 3 'Crossover's'. I didn't see any 'S'curves. I saw a thoughfully laid out layout. If your 'Crossovers are made with #4 or #6 turnout's, you have about 3" of straight - from frog to frog. If they're Atlas 'Snap' switches, then you've got 'Trouble's my friend'. (Music Man)

Do let us all know how the 2-8-0 works out.

Well the good news is that the train ran flawlessly around the layout and even made the S truns--uh crossovers.

The bad news was that Ed Edd and Eddy was more appealing.

Not to worry. It think over all it is good.

PS. He named it Dixie. He never named the other Hogwarts.

If I remember correctly, wasn't that the name of Daisy Duke's Jeep from The Dukes Of Hazzard? You should get another one and paint it like the General Lee![;)][:D]

Super news, Chip, but I don't understand the "Ed Edd.." comment. Did I miss something?

My son also liked Ed Edd and Eddy. Of course I don't mind because next to those guys, I'm a genius!!

Chip,

If I'm following this correctly, it was your daughter and not your son who was the real Hogwarts enthusiast. If the Nashville, Chattanooga and St Louis can live on its own merits with your son, perhaps the red passenger cars can be replaced by Pullman green. Maybe, as long as it is identifiably "his" train, by road name or whatever, his enthusiasm will continue, even if having to fit in with his other interests.

This would allow a closer integration with your own period, with enough of a "freelance" approach to incorporate any specific items for your son,

But the Spectrum 2-8-0 sounds like a good move, compared to previous efforts in this area. I have other Spectrum units that I'm happy with. The Pennsylvania K4 ( I've one of those!) would match some of your other units, wouldn't it?

It's getting wierd, I admit.

I already have 4 engines a caboose and 3 boxcars and a reefer painted in Hogwarts. All the unpainted locos are either SP or ATSF. This one is a wild card. It will probably be the first one to go sound.

What my son want's to pull are the Hogwart's Passenger cars. I'm going to rig a Overton baggage car with a Kadee on one side and a bent paper clip coupler so that he can pull them without sacraficing the 2-8-0's versatility. But no matter how you look at it. I have 3 locos 20 years too young.

At this point, I'm sticking with the Hogwarts colors. What the heck, I'm modeling a line that wasn't completed until 15 years after my era. Why not freelance the road name as well.

Chip--glad to hear the 2-8-0 was a success. They're quite a little jewel of a loco--from what I hear, they're the best of the Spectrum line. I've got one in WP livery, and it's a little charmer, and VERY sure-footed on trackwork. And for its size, it's a very good little puller. I could be wrong, but I think the 'N' and the 'C' in the road name stand for 'Nashville, Chattanooga and St. Louis.'
