Posted by scubaterry on Friday, April 15, 2005 3:55 PM
What size wheels do you use for Box Cars, Gondo's, reefers, etc? What rolling stock uses differant size wheels?
Confused in Marathon.

Sorry, I am stuck in my own little HO world. All of my boxcars are 40' as well as my reefers. The gondolas are 46' and again all in HO. Is that sufficient info? I have been doing this for over a year now don't suspect I can use the NEW-BEE excuse much longer. I am a slow learner.

99% use 33". Modern 100 ton Hoppers and container 'Well' cars are exception's. HO models of these cars MAY - I said "may" - have 33" wheels, anyway. Better check before buying replacement's.

Terry,
Better "scale 'em out". I got some false info awhile back from a friend. He was sure I needed
36" wheelsets. I ordered a LOT of InterMountain wheelsets... poped out the old and slipped the
new ones in. They would not even turn from rubbing on the brake pads.

The sad thing is, I HAVE a pair of dial calipers from my machining days... I choose the lazy path and
just took the advice of a friend. Good luck, Dave
