Identify the prototype

Driving along today I met this train pulled by Norfolk Southern locomotives. Can you tell me what type loco it is?


Further down the road I came across this line of 'camp cars'..

Are these rolling bunk houses that are taken from place to place for the workers? Does anyone make a model of these?
And a bit further I came across this machine which seemed to be sweeping the newly poured ballast. Is that what it was doing?

I'd like to have a model of it also!

NS 4148 appears to be a GP38 or GP38-2 with a high nose.

The third picture does look like buk cars. I doubt that anyone rides in them, they are probably only occupied while stopped at the work site.

The last one looks like it could be a ballast regulator. I am guessing it evens out the ballast. If you like MOW equipment in HO scale check out Custom Finishing. It is in the Walthers catalog and very expensive.

I think it is a GP38AC, which is a GP38 with an alternator instead of a generator.

Jacon,
I've seen them around here. A lot of them after hurricane Ivan. CSX had lots of maintance
work to do. I watch one for a little while and it appeared to be leveling the ballast, or
sweeping it from the ties... I use a paintbrush, I don't think that thing would fit in my
house, much less on the layout[:D]. Dave
