1)for your trains, go DCC 2) for water use WOODLAND SENICS material 3) take pictures of your favorite wooded area and model that. I think that is a best way to acheive the most real look you want!!
take care and have fun!!

Buy one of the many books out there that tell you exactly how to do it. That's how many of us started. Someone else has already done the figuring for you.

Fundy Northern is absolutely correct. Don't try to shortcut by attempting to get necessary info on complex problems from simple replies on this and other forums. The folks here and elsewhere mean well but no brief response is going to be nearly detailed enough to do the job effectively. The biggest favor you can do yourself is to go out and spend a few dollars on some good model railroad planning and/or scenery books and work from them.

Contact Kalmbach Pulbishers who produce Model Railroader magazine and ask them if the DVD they produced is still available. It came out in the late fall, and was to be pulled from the shelves end-March. It came free (yes) with their how-to edition called Model trains, Step By Step. That DVD is a winner for beginners....really.
