Believe it or not, I tried experimenting with both, drywall joint compound and plaster of paris. I have learned that plaster of Paris makes a pretty decent road surface. I also spread it between the rails and took an old set of wheels and ran it through the wet plaster to creat the proper tolerances. It may not work for everybody, but it worked for me! To create wooden crossings, I then scribed the plaster in a prototype pattern and weathered it using Polly Scale paints of various shades. I also used the plaster to create all the town roads.

As for the town, I personally favor a more square plan as I like to create a free-lance, New England/Upstate New York feel, and most of this seems to be squared off.

As I stated before, it may not work for you, but it worked for me!!!(BTW, if you lump joint compund to semi-form a hill, when it dries it will crack, creating some pretty unique fissures)

Hello, Blair line make a package of 2 wood crossings for about 5-6 dollars, I have made some of my own by cutting thin cardboard to the right shape then glueing the wood down, when dry I cut the wood the shape of the cardbord, paint gray/brown, weather, they do look pretty good,

Im starting my town ,using ,styrene,for the streets ,just woundering ,how,some of you guys lay out your towns,sqaure,or curved,with the streets,,and btw any al ready made wood crossings out there for in between the tracks? or are they all scatch built,i was messing with em ,cant get the right ,look with the wood , pieces
