For my layout I need a large industry about 45"x45". a yard track marks the top boundry and a branchline track marks the bottem 1. It needs to be able to fill many cars a day. Here are some of my prefences but are not necessities,
*using a varity of rolling stock
*uses coal in any way
*some sort of large building in the center
*can operate on three spurs (2 spurs are better)
*want some type of activity like people outside working on something and things like that.
*needs to have a water discharge
If any can think of an industry that meats some of these requirements please post. Any interpertation is welcome.

the paper industry meets many of your specs and MR had an excellent two part series just a couple of years ago.

maybe a steel mill or power plant.

A vlarge intermodal distribution terminal with a coal fired power plant at it's center and gantry for loading containers and trailers on flat cars. and a large truck terminal for lcl distributions with a big warehouse with a train loading door.

Sounds like a papermill is just what the doc. ordered for you. MR ran an exc.2PT. article on papermills,both past and present.Mills burn lots of coal and need alot of water. But the main thing is you can use almost every type of car there is, gons with pulpwood&flats, tankcars lots of tank cars, covered hoppers for starch & kaloin, boxcars inbound and outbound. Check out my papermill in the July '99 MR,may give you some ideas.

A large older chemcial plant useing coal for power would work well. Most of these plants used many products and would recieve a number of freight car types. If one of its products produced was glue it could even recieve stock cars and reefers with live stock or byproducts for rendering.

How about a cement plant that would need limestone, ores, and coal (for the kilns). You'd use covered hoppers, open hoppers and you could also load box cars of bagged cement. The July 94 MR had a nice article about this industry.
