My collection includes one or more each of the LL Heritage, BLI,
most Bachman and most Athearn steam HO.

While I love some of each of those brands (especially Heritage),
my best is the Trix Big Boy with Tsunami installed, followed closely
by my Rivarossi Allegheny with Tsunami. Both very good looking and
smooth running. All they needed was first rate sound.

My Kato, BN, NW2. It runs great and gets the most use on my mainly switching and interchange layout.

BLI Hudson 4-6-4
PK2 E8A/E7B set
Athearn BB F7 AB sets (2)
Athearn BB PAA-PAB-PAA set

All of the above in NYC livery, all with sound.

Other favorites include:

My favorite is My brass 2-10-0 Decapod by Empire Midland,It's an exact replica of The "Great western Rwy" #90.The prototype is still in operation at the Strasburg railroad in pennsylvania.one of the 4 remaining GW locomotives in existance, all of which are in operating condition.
I found mine on Ebay,And have seen 2 others on ebay.so I know there are at least 3,I have the orginal box it came in and someone scribbled on the box inside 1-8.Leading me too belive that there were probably 8 made by Empire Midland.

My favorite engine in my collection is my Southern GP40-X modified from the RPP shell. I spent 3 months and about $200 to complete the project.

10. T55 UP C45ACCTE: Not a UP fan but do love that waving US flag!

9. Athearn RTR Coaster F59PHI: I love the Coaster livery.

8. KATO CPR AC4400CW: I love the Beaver scheme.

7. Athearn RTR BN SD60: See #2.

6. Atlas BNSF C40-8Ws: Perfect detail and quality for the price.

5. Athearn RTR AMTK P42DCs in Phase Vb livery: I might be the only P42DC fan out there.

4. T55 BNSF ES44DC: Cannot get any more up to date than that.

3. Athearn Genesis BNSF SD70MAC in BN patch livery: Last link to the final days of Burlington Northern.

2. Athearn BB BN GP50L: The "tiger face" scheme is one of my all-time favorites.

1. P2K CB&Q SD45s in pre-merger Cascade Green livery: I love these two so much I am almost afraid to run them for fear of damaging them.

Here's one that probably very few ever heard of.... my favorite engine is a Hobbytown Alco FA with a Pittman DC-91 motor. The motor is basically the full-width of the carbody and the magnet is so large that it will actually cause old Athearn and Varney steel-sided boxcars to lean over when passing by them on a siding. This has a die cast body plus an extra weight was included and will "pull the paint off the walls". With all metal gears, the Hobbytown chassis was the first diesel "sound system" emitting a powerful growl. When not on the layout, it's so heavy, it could be used as a book end.

Southern Pacific Daylight GS4 by Concor. Great runner and pulls very well.
Southern Pacific tunnel moters from Intermountain. I have two that runn very nice but even though I spent some time at the LHS attempting to find two close runners one alway pulls or pushes the other. I can't wait until I get a DCC and some decoders to rectify this kind of stuff. Maybe fathers day?

It has to be my Proto CSX SD60 that I plan to repaint and decal to IC colors.

Its a little hard, but my 2 P2K WC SD45's sure are nice runners.

A close second would be my 3 KATO's WC SD40 6001,WC SD45 6677, DMIR SD38-2 210.

TomikawaTT corrected me on my spectrum 2-8-0-bashing, pointing out that the Niagara is a relatively low engine because of NYC's low tunnels. thanks Chuck!

I only have one steam engine, a 4884 Big Boy. I love it. I have a bunch of Diesel Engines, I would say my SP SD40T-2 Snoot is my favorite.
