old trains
Posted by Anonymous on Sunday, August 18, 2002 8:55 PM
I have several old train cars (1939) unassembled in the boxes. They are made by a company Wm. K. Walthers Inc. I can not find anything about them. I also have others cars from (1)Mantua Metals, and several Varney with paper work and unassembled. If any one can tell me where to sell these or find out their value I would appreciate it Thanks Steve

Walthers is out of Milwaukee. They are distributors of model rr tains etc and publi***he annual Walthers catalog.

Mantua Toy and Metal Products of Woodbury Heights NJ
dates back to 1926.
Two years ago Mantua stopped making trains and sold their trains division to Model Power who will up-grade and sell those trains in 2003

It seems like you have some very old cars! well, according to some 1939 issues of model railroader, Varney cars sold for about $2 and walthers for $3, but I don't have much about mantua (their camelback engine sold for $15 back then) today those prices are more or less equivalent to about $30-$50. As for where to sell them, I'd suggest eBay. (Are those cars passenger or freight?)

I only have one Mantua and it is a referigerator car with morrell's pride on the side. The varney cars are not assembeled and some are called Pullman cars. There is a hopper car a Magow caboose and others. I also have some of these small square boxes that look like motors but don't have any wires going to them. They are still in the seaded containers so I can't see if wires hook up on the back or not. Is there some way that you know of that I can mail a picture to find out what they are? I am a novice at this and just kind of inherited these trains and not sure if I should keep them or sell them. Any input that you have would be welcomed. Thank you for your help so far.
