Without a doubt more than I need, but nowhere close to what I want.
On the serious side somewhere over 150 from all different manufactures. I can say that you know you have too many when you are going thru boxes in the train room and find 2 proto GP9's and 4 Proto SD7's that are not assembled and are over 5 years old.
I think I have a addication.

I have about 9-12. Small number, but it'll grow. Quality over quantity I guess. Though I have some lame, by standards, loco's, that just sit on the shelf collecting dust. Maybe they'll run again. Maybe not.

5-steam engines.
7-diesels.

O.K. So I'm very relieved here....I've known that model railroading all along is a hobby with a huge addiction involved. But for once, its great, I know I have a "problem", but never wanted to admit to it, but it looks like we're all sitting around a alcoholics anonymous table to brag - "I like trains, and I have a problem...." Just my immediate thoughts....

But its really great to see that I'm not the only person around thats happy with having more locomotives then our railroad could ever possibly handle. It gives me a sense of relief every time I step into the local hobby shop. I don't feel bad when I give in to the temptation to purchase another loco knowing all the details, dcc, sound, etc...that I can put into the project. So modeling the Carrollton, Texas area involves modeling the Fort Worth and Western, Dallas, Garland and Northeastern, and BNSF.

So with that being the case, the diesel loco count is at five, increasing to eight. And I can think of so many others that I'd like to add....

I've got a total of sixteen engines. Five are steamers and the rest are diesels. I can cover all eras from about 1910 up to modern times.

I totally agree with BikerDad. I Also think I'm nuts with over 100 engines,150+ passenger cars,& 700+ frieght cars.

How many engines?
Posted by Hakuhatsu on Thursday, March 31, 2005 8:09 PM
How many engines? I don't have a massive fleet, I have a small "test" fleet that I have for testing my track and sizing up sidings and whatnot for trains...

"Test fleet"
1 Athearn EMD F7-A Amtrak
1 Athearn EMD GP35 Soo line
1 Athearn ALCo PA-1 Southern Pacific ("Daylight" scheme)

Gopher State Railroad (Formerly Minnesota & Southwestern)
2 ALCo Models (Kumata) ALCo C-420 (unpainted)
1 ALCo Models (Kumata) ALCo C-430 (unpainted)
1 Atlas ALCo RS-3 (currently painted for Rock Island)
1 ER Models Baldwin "Sharknose" RF-16 (Undecorated)

So, three in the test fleet and five for the railroad.

Most of my engines are dead, or from the sixties, or both[sigh]. I plan to get 3 more SD40-2s to add to my two-2s and one plain 40, and a BLI C30-7, but that's about ten times as much as I need for my railway. I could run it with my two kato -2s and my proto SD45. Two passing sidings, 1 mile main line, 3/4 of it in tunnels. Or I could do it with two of my proto C-liners, and two of Proto GP9s

I think one thing that's relevant is "what scale are you in", after all, we'd be pretty surprised if a G Scaler had as many locomotives as an N scaler.

My current roster:

Modern Heavies
4 Kato SD70MAC
3 Atlas Dash8-BW
1 Kato AC4400CW
1 Kato SD90/43 MAC

Diesel Middleweights
1 Kato SD40
1 Atlas GP30
1 Atlas GP35

Diesel Switcher
1 LLSW1200

Diesel Passenger
4 Kato PA-1
1 Kato PB-1
2 Kato E8
1 LL E8
2 Kato RDC

Steam
3 Bachmann Spectrum Consolidation 2-8-0
2 Bachmann Spectrum Mountain 4-8-2
2 Kato Mikado 2-8-2
2 MDC Mogul 2-6-0
1 MDC Consolidation 2-8-0
1 LL Berkshire 2-8-4
1 Atlas Mogul 2-6-0
1 LL 2-8-8-2

All in Normal scale. [:D]

I have recently sold a Kato SD45, and may be selling one of the Bachmann Connies. Current plans include expanding the roster by 6-10 locos this year.

nuts! I knew I'd forgotten one... [B)]

The late 1950s era Bunter Ridge runs (in n-scale):
3 pairs Alco FA2/FB2 (A-B-B-A and an A-B consists, Life-Like)
1 pail Alco PA1/PB1 (Kato)
4 Alco RS-11s (Atlas/Kato)
3 Alco RSD-12s (Atlas/Kato)
6 Alco RS-2s (Kato)
5 Alco RSD-4/5s (Atlas)
3 EMD E8s (usually A-B-A consist, Kato)
3 EMD SD9s (Atlas)
2 Baldwin VO-1000s (Atlas)
2 EMD SW9s (Life Like)

The various Alco road switchers run in a number of consists, including alone.

As you can see, they love Alcos. The only expansion I foresee is if someonone comes out with a good Alco S-2 (or -3 or -4) model in N-scale that is not a pain to convert to DCC (are you listening, Kato?). I've got too many conversion projects waiting for me to add any more to the queue that aren't simply drop-in installations.

Some of you guys sure have a lot of locomotives. I hold to the adage: The more you have; the more time you spend having to take care of it.

I'm happy with my two:
1 Athearn 2-8-2 Mikado
1 P2K Alco S1 switcher

At some point, I may eventually "double" my fleet but...probably not much more.
