Do a Google search for "diesel light rail vehicle"--many cities who don't want to string catenary or trolley wire are exploring using diesel-electric self-powered passenger vehicles--in other words, doodlebugs--for passenger transit!

Of course, calling a shiny new vehicle a "doodlebug" is as bad as calling one a "trolley", so they are called "Light Rail Vehicles" of one sort or another...

IRM's got one that USED to run, but they've been working on it for the past few years.

Cass has a doodlebug that they use during the week.

Both the EBT and Strasburg have operable doodlebugs.

And don't forget the Galloping Geese, which are "sorta" doodles!
