How and Where to re-motor BACHMANN ?

You could try contacting Bachmann and asking if they can sell you one of the can motors as fitted to their latest locos - the GP40 et al. These are very good and judging by the price of the loco they shouldn't cost much. You might want to add flywheels as they don't come with them (at least, not in the Geeps - there may be other models out there with the same motor and flywheels fitted). Hope this helps!

Why do you want to repower it?

As mentioned above, it would be cheaper to replace it, or if you want keep the shell and place it on another chassis. A LL P1K F3 would be a good donor candidate.

The Bachmann Plus F7 were/are superior models.

Sagami makes great motors.......many different sizes and configurations.
I used one to repower an old HO diecast model from the early 60's. Works fantastic!!!

Hello Mal,

I understand where you're coming from but consider this. Most of the quality motors available price from approximately $30 U.S dollars and up. These are for locomotives with motors mounted in the center of the body.

If this unit has sentimental value to you then you can save it. BUT, it would be much more cost effective for you if you purchased an Athearn F7. Much more rugged and smoother running. On line discount hobby stores still sell them in the $30 to $40 range. E-Bay also has loads of new Athearn units up for bid.

That would be a much better way for you to go. In thinking about it, you can even take your Bachmann shell and simply slap on the Athearn chassis! So you wind up with motor, drive, trucks, and a heavier frame.

Why not just get a better power chassis and mount the shell if you want it that bad? it's sort of like wanting to repower a crappy Yugo automobile!

I doubt if repowering kits are available for these toy-like models.
