11 years after starting this thread, I hope the OP decided on a roadbed.

I used the branchline thickness Homabed and am very pleased with it. I spike my Walthers/Shinohara track, and it takes spikes very well (although you can nail or caulk the track if you prefer).

California roadbed is homasote that has been milled to an exact thickness. I have a friend who used it on his last layout and was very happy with it. If you like homasote, the only drawback I can see is cost. Here is a link:

They say to use N scale roadbed with 1/4 cork strip in the middle to make it look smaller like a branchline siding ,I see the cal road bed compony makes a branch line size roadbed made with a different material does anybody have experience with this product.
