When I was on active duty (I"m a Reservist now) my modeling was limited due to cramped quarters onboard ship, deployments (I think the first four years I was married I spent a total of 26 months at sea) etc. I kept my interest up by mostly reading magazines and books that my dad would mail me while I was deployed.

If you ain't having fun, you're not doing it right and if you are having fun, don't let anyone tell you you're doing it wrong.

The latest issue of Scale Rails (NMRA bulletin) mentioned how some soldiers in Iraq are starting an on-base club in Baghdad.

I'm an Air Force brat so I had to keep my trains mobile. That's why I haven't had a serious start to a layout till now. I tried to start one of my own and didn't have room for more than a 4 x 4 table in the first 3 houses we lived in. I bought Joe Fugate's old Morale Falls and Sadgino and held on to that for about 25 years but was never able to expand or include it in any of my attempts. Tried a complete layout in a dedicated train room in our last house and had to constantly move stuff to be able to build stuff. I was unable to find a direction I wanted to go in but toward the end of living in that house I settled on a track plan that would have probably worked for me. Then we became empty nesters and all that room in the house was waste (my wifes viewpoint) so we sold and now live in a nice place that has a great 18 x 22 foot room over the garage that is ALL train room. Two years and I've gone about 150% farther than I did in the nine years in the last place. I'm on a roll!

Let's see...

- I'm stationed in the San Diego area.

- I was stationed in Italy awhile back. I would:
a) pick up a bunch of stuff when I came stateside,
b) have my parents pick up and mail to me, or
c) mail order back when TrainsourceTexas was in business they'd send me whatever I needed. The Internet really hadn't matured as far as online shopping.

- I make my wife work to support my habit, and beat her severely if she comes up short, particularly with excuses like groceries and bills.

- I worked mostly on models. My layout never got very far over there.

- Thanks. And my thanks to you also.

Lets hear from you. Where are you stationed (if you can say?)

How do you get your stuff if you are overseas?

How do you stretch the $$ enough.

I was in the Marine corp and I can't imagine trying to build a layout while serving stateside let alone while overseas.

Anyone serving in any branch of the service has my deepest respect.
