conversion from feet to 1:87 scale?
Posted by Anonymous on Wednesday, July 17, 2002 5:48 PM
Can anyone tell me how to convert a foot into a 1:87 scale foot. I'm in the process of building a custom rescue truck for my layout and I need to covert to HO scale to make it an accurate model.

Hi,

Divide 12 inches by 87 (which rounds out to .138 inches) or use 3.5 millimeters to the foot.

I find the metric conversion (3.5 mm = 1 foot)far easier for most purposes.

I bought a General HO scale rule (with N,S and O) several years ago and have found it to be one of the best purchases that I have made in tools.

Roger is absolutely right -- a good scale rule is absolutely essential. The General rule is metal and very durable. there is also a clear plastic scale rule (forget who makes it) which is useful for laying out parts. But the tool that I find really fascinating is a dial caliper that measures in HO feet and inches. You can measure materials for their scale equivalent, depth, and any number of other uses. It is surprisingly precise. Model Railroader had an article about how to use it and there are about ten things you can do with it. It is a bit pricey but I now regard it as just as essential as the scale ruler

"HO" scale rulers are available at most well-stocked hobby shops. Cost, about 5 bucks.
Not sure about your project, you might want to use a commercially available HO scale vehicle as a starting point?
Good Luck, Todd C.
