MRC diesel synchro sound decoder
Posted by Anonymous on Monday, February 21, 2005 9:42 AM
Im thinking of buying a MRC diesel sound decoder. The one I am looking at has a speaker with a basic baffle and of course the decoder itself. Do these decoders work/sound good? And any suggestions on where to mount the speaker in a genesis SD70MAC?

Thanks

I can't help you on mounting issues with the sd70MAC however I have mounted 3 of these very sound decoders in some others, the sound was too loud for me so i installed a resistor on the speaker leads. The decoder performs as well as any of the MRC decoders. The sound is good. I'm not a rivet counter and I've heard that the sound is not as good as other sounde decoders out there though they are usually more expensive also. I went with the MRC as I happened to snag a good deal on them off Ebay.

when you say "performs as well as any MRC decoder" Is that good or bad. I've heard mixed reviews.

JPM I am a former owner of the MRC diesel sound decoder that I had in a Up AC4400. The sound is so loud which is the problem. It was like a high pitch sound too. If you have any rodents in the trainroom they will all scatter and so will you. LOL Anyway I recently sold that engine and decoder because I di dnot like the sound of it and it was very annoying. I now have the Soundtraxx decoder coming back to me. As for the sound issue the soundtraxx was all good. I guess for starters sound you can buy he MRC decoder but you will soon learn that you might not like it also. I sold the decoder installed in the train for a mere $70. A RTR athearn AC4400 with the Mrc Decoder. Wow the buyer got a deal I guess. I get rid of an annoying sound unit. We both are happy. I personnall think that you should save the $50 on that decoder and get the other $50 to buy a soundtraxx. You will be much pleased with the sound. I am sure of that.

Oh and by the way JPM as for install it is very easy. I just stuck the wires in the rtr plug by color matching and using tape. Then for the speaker it fits right into the shell and use tape to hold it up. It is very easy. I would just say be wise in your purchase. You may like it though. I liked it for about a few weeks before It got on my last nerve. The sound does not sound so great either.
