Actually, now the engnne doesnt work. I have put in 3 different decoders. I cant get the lights to work, unless I give it abunch of power. the lights act like it is on DC track. What kind of decoder are you useing? And that only the rear and foward main will light (more like glow). The ditch lights dont work at all.

Any idea?

Best Regards
John

I installed an NCE Da-SR decoder in my SD-70. I bought mine in the fall last year. Do not know if Athearn has changed the bulbs, had trouble with mine. Blew them all out on first use even with resistors added. Athearn sent me out new bulbs, no charge and cudos to athearn, but I blew them out too. Replaced all with minitronics bulbs and all works fine now. Replacing the ditch light bulbs is not fun buy the way.

Based on my problems, I suspect you may have blown out the lights too. If you saw a bright flash just once when you first tested the decoder, they are gone. You mention that the engine does not run now. Nothing?

Expalin a little better what is going on along with which decoder please.

Did you connect the decoder to those little lights without a resistor. I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure they are 1.5V and a normal decoder output fry'em. If you hadn't figured it out I was goig to tell you to search for SD70 and you would find my old topic about this. I havn't put the decoder in mine yet as I am still in the process of moving the clubs programming track. Good luck with your project.

For those of us who don't know, how do you get the shell off an Athearn Genesis SD70M?[:I][8)]

I used an Atlas 4 function decoder in mine.I added 1000 ohm resistors to every bulb and had no trouble. The shell on on the SD70 spartan is the hardest to get off.I had to end up removing the cab and battery boxes to get mine off.Seems like I found some glue or paint residue holding the tabs in place on the long hood. The SD70M is alot easier to remove.Lightly squeeze the long hood where the tabs go into the frame and it should pop loose.Watch the bulb wiring though.Dan

Thats mine SD-70 spartan cab Conrail. Yes, I had 860 resistors at first. Not good enough I learned.

To drift back to canazar, maybe check the wiring, might have placed a wire to the decoder out of order.
