Conductive Liquid for Rail Joints
Posted by Anonymous on Sunday, June 30, 2002 10:47 AM
I read an ad somewhere (wish I could remember) that talked about some type of metallic goo that could be applied (instead of soldering) to any pressure-dependent electrical connection. Whenever I ask any of my local friends about it they claim that such a substance is impossible to make. Does anybody on this list know of this type of material? I would like to apply it at some of my rail connections.

Maybe you're looking for conductive paint? I used some of it on all of my rail joints, then I filed the tops at each connection. The filing was a real pain, but I have great contacts now on just about al of my rail except for an occasional contact problem on my switches. I bought in a hobby shop on a trip to New York.
Good luck, Pete

I'd rather file than solder all of my rail joints (an even BIGGER pain, since I can't solder worth a d---!). Can you tell me who manufactures this conductive paint?

Try doing a web search for the phrase "conductive paint" if that is really what you're interested in. I don't think it is what you want to use in lieu of solder, however. I remember some stuff that came in a tube called Liquid SOlder or something, but as I recall it never worked very well. I'd recommend practicing soldering - there's plenty of tips on the internet.
