How do I weather the signs on my layout?

Most of the signs on my structures are made on Microsoft Word, then printed off using a standard ink jet and paper. I glue them to .040 styrene sheet using 3M Photomount adhesive. The problem is, how can I realistically weather them. [%-)][%-)][D)][%-)] Any method using liquids would be out of the question because the ink on the signs would run and blotch. Thanks for the help!

You could lightly rub them with weathering chalks. Put some on your finger and rub away. I've done this with signs I've made for my structures. It would be best to try the weathering before gluing them down permanently. This way if you overdo it, you can print off another one and have another go at it.

A sign weathering technique I remember from the '89 NMRA national convention in Houston is to use fine grit sandpaper, fold a small piece in half, and gently etch the ink out of the paper in the sign in a vertical up and down pattern until just enough of the ink fades from the letters / numbers in the sign......chuck
