Older,repowered mantua 0-4-0 running problem
Posted by mikebonellisr on Thursday, February 3, 2005 2:48 PM
My Mantua 0-4-0 runs pretty good in reverse, about a scale 4mph.Leaving it at the same throttle setting,it will not move foward untill I increase power quite a bit. Then when it starts to move,it hesitates a bit with each revolution of the wheels[the rod on the left side is at the top of the revolution].It smooths out at about 12 smph.Would moving the motor foward (or back) improve it's operation?...Any suggestions?

You've got the right solution. The armature moves back and forth and that is more then likely your problem. I installed a "Helix Humper" from Bowser and it runs great with a Digitrax decoded in it.

I have the old metal kit to this engine which might differ from what you are working with
It might be that the metal contact on the side that rubs against the wheel treads is a bit loose, picking up better one direction than another. Mine tended to move a bit when i changed directions because the screw was loose.

Bob,Dave,
The 0-4-0 is a older, metal engine, and I do have it repowered with a helix humper and a digitrax decoder.I'll have to spend a little more time with it,but I'm glad that I'm on the right track Thanks
