I was never a preorderer.  But, I've now preordered some things over the past year.  

I found that if I just waited, there would be plenty in stock at other hobby shops, sometimes at better prices for whatever reason, so it made the preorder process kinda moot.

I think for any thing else in the future, I'll just wait until the shelves have it (online shelves), and buy it from the shop that has the best price.

You are correct!    I am buying everything NH because that's all I model (with very rare exceptions).  Normally, this keeps me out of trouble (no Big Boys for me, thanks!), but every once and a while, a veritable cornucopia of NH models hit the market...and this may be the most I've ever seen.  Rapido knows that the NH sells.

Not bad for a railroad with just 2000 route miles (30th in size among US RRs); the NH's longest train route ran just over 230 miles from end to end.

However, in our favor, the NH connected the largest US city with three state capitals and ranked 3rd in passengers carried.  As Kalmbach's "Historical Guide to North American Railroads" said, "The New Haven had more history per route mile than any three western railroads put together."  Add a bunch of bright and flashy paint schemes, a heavily populated area that is both pretty wealthy and has a lot of basements, plus nothing to replace it in the hearts and minds of local railfans, and you've got a pretty popular railroad even though it's been gone for more than half a century.

Heck, not only does the NH scheme exist in museums and tourist lines, it's still in revenue service on ConnDOT.  The City of New Haven's Fire Dept. uses a NH logo on their trucks, and so does the local soccer team booster club.  The minor league baseball team Hartford Yard Goats uses the NH's script logo, and there's a number of shortlines that are "inspired" by the NH's schemes.

As for conrucopia's go, ScaleTrains has a lot of Rio Grande hitting the market late this year, with projected delivery dates only a month apart, for HO GP40's, SD45's and N SD40T-2's.

There is only one item that I wish I had preordered and that is the Canadian Pacific 'The Canadian' passenger train by Rapido. There are no plans to offer either the train or individual cars again unfortunately so I have been acquiring the train piece by piece. The only thing I am missing is the dining car and there hasn't been one of those offered on eBay for at least three years.

If they do change their minds and start offering individual cars again, I will definitely preorder the dining car.

I've had the second edition of Zenk's book on the diesel-hydraulics on order since the day it was first announced.  Had to reorder and pay in advance.  Might be due 'any day now' -- and you can probably get one without the long preorder time...

I find this morning that Garbely's book on the Emmas closes pre-orders on Friday.  And they say they're printing to order and it'll be one and done with no future editions...

Sorry, but our Shoreliner magazine only deals in subjects about the New Haven before its death on 1/1/1969.  Sure, if we're doing the history of a city or any equipment, we'll continue the story to the modern day - but only as an epilogue.

Railpace magazine is probably be the best source for the current status of the Danbury-Beacon line.

I have pre-ordered since about 2009, first with the Sunset HO CPR 2-10-4 and shortly thereafter for the BLI Brass Hybrid UP 9000 series 4-12-2. I waited almost five years for each of them, but they came.  I have two on pre-order, the Bachmann 0-6-0 (been 18 months now), and the Rapido Excursion Version of the Empress CPR 2816, about 18 months as well.

And wth that, I'm at the end of hobby purchases.  I have a working layout, locomotives from five different roads, rolling stock, passenger consists, and I don't need any more at this point in my life.

You sir, are a rare bird in this hobby, assuming by saying you do not "need" any more trains at this point, you won't be purchasing anymore beyond your current committment.  "need" is slippery word - I'll just leave it at that.  But if you mean you aren't purchasing any more rolling stock other than what you are committed to now, I'd be interested in you reporting back on this in several years to see how that goes.

Like many, I have accumulated more models than I need, and am at the point where I expect I have far more than I will be able to run on my modest layout. 

For the past 15 years, I have been going through my collection regularly and have been working on thinning out models as I find models I prefer, to keep the collection from getting even bigger.  And selling surplus models helps to raise money for some future purchases, and I do have a number of loco's on pre-order (back to the theme of this topic).

One thing I continue to not have nearly enough of is hobby time, so I've had to look realistically at what I expect I will never have time for: One thing is I've accumulated many loco's that would need decoders added, so slowly I've been replacing DCC ready loco's with factory equipped DCC loco's.  I do have a number of decoders purchased to pop into some of my loco's, but others I'm just selling off since I don't think I'll have time to get to them all.  And I have some unnumbered locos; same thing, tasks I have little time for.  The proceeds from the DCC ready loco's will help fund the DCC/sound loco's I have on preorder right now.  So far I've saved up enough to cover 2/3rds of the costs I have committed to, and thinning continues.

Agreed, the word has several meanings, or intents in this case...motivation. I 'needed' to learn a lot in order to advance, and as I advanced in the hobby, I found I desired to broaden my stable a bit...except it kept doing that.  I felt this was a need to be happy, or happier, and I fed it as and when I felt I could.  This is just under two decades now, and I have felt the urge waning, the interest cooling, and I have turned once again to an old hobby that I had left cold-turkey as of 2005 (astronomy). Health problems of my own, and my wife had hers as well (b cancer, the great oncological scourge for women), and it left me flat for nearly four years.  Looking at my holdings in MR rationally, I have to stop, meaning it truly is a need.

I played with my trains just last night, first time in three weeks. So, the interest is still there, but the ardour has cooled.

I had not intended to reply to this thread for the simple reason that I have never pre-ordered anything and never will.

But Crandell (Selector) and Jim (riogrande5761) really struck a chord about cutting back on locomotives and rolling stock as the years go by.

I have always had a bad habit of what I call "buying orgies" and model railroading is no exception. I have stopped buying locomotives and rolling stock altogether, and I have been selling off a lot of unneeded stuff over the past 5 to 7 years.

I use the term "unneeded" because I am nearly at the point where my layout now only holds that which is essential to my era and location.
