I have an article in the March 2005 Railroad Model Craftsman showing how to make model grass using dyed faux fur. It is centered on dead grass for California modeling but also demostrates green grass, bushes and brush. The original web article is at:
http://www.pacificcoastairlinerr.com/fur_grass/
I am amazed at the outcome of this process and hope it is helpful to your modeling.

Nice work, harold. It looks very good. Congrats on getting an article published in RMC. My March issue won't get here for a long time yet, but I'm looking forward to seeing you in print.
Best regards
Ed

How well does this fur look in HO scale? Seems like it would be a little too tall. It sure does
look good in O scale. Dave

This is a closeup of the grass made from plush felt;
The figure is a Preiser HO.
Hope that helps

Harold,
Great article! I read it one night just before picking my wife up at Work. She's an Operations Manager at a Jo-Ann ETC Store. Of course half her wages seem to go back to the store for her sewing and craft stuff. I went in and took a look at her selection of Felts and furs and there is some potential there!
Thanks again!
Chris

One trick for using fake fur: If you want shorter "grass", a hair clipper (with the appropriate attachments) can be used to trim the fur to whatever length you consider appropriate.
