What photo hosting are you using?
Posted by Soo Line fan on Saturday, October 28, 2023 3:01 PM

Hello everyone!

Wondering what a good choice for photo hosting is. Like a lot of you, I had a photo bucket account. Losing it is not a big deal as I did not have a ton of images and the ones I did have are backed up.

So, what is everyone using and why? Likes and dislikes?

I use Imgur. It is extremely easy to use.

I was uploading to and using my own website until I exceeded the 500MB photo storage threshold. Sad

A few months back I opened a free Flickr account and have been using that for posting photos here.  (Limit: 1,000 photos)  It's a little quirky to learn initially but I know exactly where to go in my photo album ("Camera roll") to post uploaded photos full-size.  I can even edit or crop folders with the built in editor on the site.

I use imgur.  I like it except for the opening page which sometimes has some questionable things on it.

Wow, I have never had that happen. Very strange.

For purely railroad stuff, mostly models, I use Trainboard Railimages.  When Photo Bucket went away, I started using Imgur for other stuff.

To echo other sentiments here, I use imgur. I like it because it plays well with pretty much every forum I mess around with, and it is convenient from both desktop and mobile.

After the Photobucket fiasco, I did briefly try Imgur, but found Flickr easier to use, (yes, I can be a contrarian!) and having now exceeded the free limit of 1000 images, now happily pay for Flickr Pro.

I'm with Bear and Tom with using Flickr as well, since 2013. I gladly pay the annual fee as Flickr is a repository of 46,236 (!) photos for me. One major advantage of the premium Flickr is there is no size limit to the resolution of the photo you want to upload. This is important to me as there have been times when I've needed to download an archived photo and I can do so in its native resolution, sometimes being over 15,000 pixels wide.

It's a little quirky to learn initially but I know exactly where to go in my photo album ("Camera roll") to post uploaded photos full-size.

Camera Roll is a good place to see your entire library of photos, Tom but Photostream will do the same thing chronologically. For easy organizing it is convenient to make 'Albums' where you can gather photos and sort them into categories.

Yes, there are some different tricks to learn about Flickr but once you get the hang of things it becomes easier.

I've found that renaming photos with more of a descriptive title certainly helps when searching. I have thousands still labeled as img-0001, etc. As I come across them I rename their ID to a more searchable description.

At Flickr you can choose the 'permission' level of who can see the photo. Public allows full access and there are several levels of privacy for 'invited' users or family members to 'me only' for secure storage. Some users allow downloading and/or reposting, others do not, but you can copy a link to the photo. Some contributors allow their photos to be used in the Public Domain and others use the Creative Commons rules where you can repost if you give proper credit. These are levels you can set for individual photos or albums.

Good Luck, Ed

I use Postimages.

After the photo-bucket debacle ( lots of very unfriendly messages left for them ) I switched .

I find postimage easy to use.

I also use Imgur.

I'm still using photobucket, but haven't had much to add lately, as a lot of my newer locomotives need to be re-wired to match the original ones, and I've already buggered-up one of them and cannot get it to run at all.  I was going to simply throw it away, but decided to remove the motor, to use in an older loco.  I don't intend to buy any more locomotives, as I have more than enough, and for the most recent ones I bought, I cannot get them to run at all.

Imgur is what I use now. This is what I need to do for this Forum only.

Insert the photo SD card in my computer, make a copy of that photo ("subject" #2 = copy of course) and send it to "documents", open photo "with paint", resize the photo smaller (it will upload to Imgur faster), then upload that photo to Imgur. After Imgur has it in my lineup, I open that photo and "click" on "BBcode", then go back to MRR forum and "paste" then finish my "Reply". This is how I muddle though the muck. There probably is an easier/better way. It's that simple. LOL

You can "click "on the photo and it will open larger and you can "zoom in" to see the valve stems on the truck tires.

I use imgur. It's cheap (free) and easy to use. It occasionally has connectivity issues when uploading photos but that's just a nuisance. It might be due to my slow satellite internet connections. Spectrum is laying fiber optic cable all around me but they are bypassing my end of the side road so I'm stuck with lousy internet for at least another year. If and when they get around to offering fiber optic on my end of the road, they are going to want me to bundle their TV service with internet. That's when I'll tell them to stick it. I'll have lots of choices for internet TV providers and they won't be one of them.

Sorry. I didn't start off intending to rant but it just went there. As you probably have guessed, this is a very sore subject for me.

I opened my own free website using Weebly and host my pictures from there. I just keep it all hidden from public view. I have hundreds of pictures in it and have yet to discover a limit. It's free and no ads.

Mark.

I have my own website where I post all the pictures. This means I don't share copyright with anyone else (which I believe all the free image hosting sites require when you sign up).

I tried using Google photo, but I could only post a photo icon that you needed to click on to see the photo link.  Even then it might only work if the viewer is signed on to Google.

Now I use Imgur, where I can have the photo showing on the post.
