Experience with DPM Modular Building Panels?
Posted by danmerkel on Sunday, October 15, 2023 9:22 PM

I have completed a few DPM/Woodlawn Scenics kits but have not experimented with those modular building panels. My question for those who have worked with them is whether or not they are the same size as their kits and can be added to or interchanged with the kit's parts.

Anyone know?

Thanks in advance.

Short answer, no, not really but it depends on which kit.

However the DPM modulars are very adaptable and there are dozens of examples of brick buildings that have had wings added on with different brick patterns.

Now there were some DPM kits that used the modular sections exclusively. These ARE expandable or 'bashable' with no problems.

Drywell Inks, White Water Brewing and I think Fed UPS is another that does use modular walls.

I made this background building with DPM modulars:

The Cutting's Scissor kit is a one-piece wall section kit and not made from modular sections.

I have made a number of DPM modular kits, and do not think they can be interchanged with other building kits, especily at the corner joins. DPM makes a planning guide with full size images of all their parts. I photocopy the different parts I use and make a full size prototype by gluing them to light cardstock (old cereal boxes). Then I can test fit it on the layout. If it works, each paper section has the part number. I count them up and buy what to needed to make the model.

I have quite a few of those DPM structure kits, but I like the variety of the segments for scratching building...my biggest one was my version of National Grocers, a southern Ontario company...

A couple of views...

..and some of the normally unseen views...

I still have enough unopened packages of the DPM parts to make another fairly good-sized structure for the partial upper level of my layout, too.
