It's a small four wheel industrial switcher, may or may not be based upon any prototype, as there are quite a few around like this. Is this the type of information you are looking for? "What is this" covers a lot of ground.

From the looks of those "buffers" it appears to be of European (German ?) prototype or based thereof.

I think it may be a Joeuf (french) or Lima (italian) made switcher decorated for British Rail - probably from the 1970s but here were a few European model similarly released. couplers are definitely European but the body may be derived from the "Plymouth" US switcher?

I think it may well be Lima, or possibly Jouef/Playcraft. The symbol on the side is the old British Rail one (known irreverently as "the arrow of indecision") and the loco number is in the old BR style (D = diesel, then a stock number - there was also E = electric). The paint scheme and number is fictional - BR never owned a loco like this though it does look vaguely like some of their older small switchers. The coupler is the standard European loop type which to me suggests Lima - their early attempts on the UK market were to HO scale rather than OO, and a lot of equipment from their other European range was used. It's definitely European but my guess would be a Germanic line because of the ID #. The D would stand for Deutschebahn, I believe. I just hope I spelled it right since I lived there for two years. That would be embarrassing.

Dale, if the loco would be from the Deutsche Bahn (it is definitely not) it would carry a "DB" on the side...
