Baldwin 2-6-6-2T
Posted by Daywhitemtns on Saturday, July 15, 2023 3:38 PM

I'm a real fan of these Baldwin logging locomotives and would like to obtain one for my logging line adjunct to my common carrier layout. I have checked around and find no current example of one being produced. I know from time-to-time brass models are available but those are too rich for my blood. I'm just wondering if anyone knows of any manufacturer who might be planning to bring a diecast/plastic version to market (e.g. Bachmann, Atlas, Athearn, BLI et al.).

Thank you for any help you might provide.

Mantua made them, perhaps still does (or did Horizon buy them out...can't recall).

Looks to me, after a quick search, like it is no longer available except on the Bay.

Lionel took over the Mantua line (from Model Power), fairly recently. I just checked their Website, and they only offer Mikados and some rolling stock for now.

I have a Mantua 2-6-6-2 (posted on the Weekend Photo Fun thread...) that runs very well. I added a tender for extra power pickup - the original power pickup is limited and will cause issues if you have long turnouts or less-than-pristine track. The tender also facilitates the installation of a decoder and a speaker for sound.

The rarity of the item seems to have increased the price of these engines on the used market. They DO run well, one of the best steamers produced by Mantua in my humble opinion. There is a rubber tire on mine that makes it a great puller. My model has a slight wobble, but this was not unusual on logging routes with ify trackage Smile.

Thanks guys. I guess I'll have to keep looking on the used or ebay markets for the time being.

Be careful buying them on the second-hand market.

My Mantua model had zinc-pest in the leading and trailing trucks. It is currently an odd looking 0-6-6-0 until suitable repairs are made.

Check the pictures over before purchasing.
