Good morning everyone. Chloe, please have the cook fry me at least a half pound of bacon. I am going to go on a binge this morning.

-  -  -  -  -  -  -  -  -  -

My daughter is off on her adventure driving coast-to-coast in a tiny little sports car. She just left Florida and is on her way to Savannah to see old friends from high school. Then to Jeckyl Island for some beach time.

I grilled twice last weekend; sirloins and ribeyes on the charcoal grill on Saturday; hamburgers on the propane grill on Sunday.  My son and daughter in law were in town Saturday; just my wife and I on Sunday.  I actually did a decent job; son and wife like their steaks rare; d-i-l and I like medium well.  That is hard for me to juggle cooking times.  We also have access to excellent meat in Dodge City; we buy from a butcher shop that processes its own steers.

Machine shops/repair shops sounds like an interesting topic.  I do have pictures from Santa Fe's old Cleburne shops; but getting them into a format to share them here is a challenge on my end.

Good morning Diners.  A large coffee on the go please, Janie.

It has been a busy few days looking after grandchildren etc..

Where ever the Diner goes I am happy.  Going away for half the month as it is.

Try and catch up on the posts and call in later.

How about fresh made burgers all around with as many toppings as you can fit on the bun?

The best burger I remember (right now) was one I experienced in Arlington, Texas.

It was 1/2 pound of beef with bacon bits and shredded cheddar mixed in. The toppings were Salsa Rosada, Grilled Banana Pepper Strips, Bean Sprouts, and a Pineapple Slice!

It was wonderful.

It's the end of the month already!! Where shall we go in July?

At the beginning of June I had suggested the possibility of doing either signals and signal houses or machine shops and repair facilities. The signal theme seems to have been well received. Thanks for all the contributions.

Are you interested in visiting machine shops and service facilities during July, or do you have another suggestion?

Cheers!!

Dave

I hate the idea of "resting" meat for ten minutes when it's removed from the grill.  Put it on the plate and serve it while it's still hot.

Ulrich has been following this discussion and he mentioned that his wife, Petra, never lets things rest for more than five minutes.

Personally I do let large roasts and birds rest but we rest them in the oven. We carve the roast/bird and then put it back into the oven at low to medium heat covered with foil. Then we will baste the roast every few minutes with hot stock. That seems to give us the best results. Everything is moist and hot when served.

Cheers!!

I'm not sure of the science, but the idea of letting meat rest is that the outside isn't medium and the inside isn't ultra rare.  I admit I am impatient and 5 min is all I give it.

My wife tried a new restaurant this weekend, a sports bar with none of the TV's showing the Nascar race and unfortunate music blasting.  They put the calories on their Internet menu and the lowest burger meal was 1150 and it went up from there to 1400 depending on the "model" you ordered.

The "hostess" had pink hair and a nose ring.  It looked better than pink hair usually looks but I will never be a fan of nose jewelry.

My wife really liked her fish and chips.   I had the Reuben, it was OK.

On the train front, I wanted to work in a double slip switch.  The best place for that seems to be a removable hatch so that I can reach deep into the layout.  Too complicated to lay that track over the hatch, plus I did a poor job cutting the removable piece.   My jigsaw tended to move out of a perpendicular.

Hi Everyone,

Brunhilde, coffee with cream, please.

Mr. B:  Have a little compassion for those burgers and dogs that just finished a strenuous and hot workout.  They might need a moments rest. Whistling Laugh Laugh

A really good "pub" burger sounds mighty good especially when fresh off the grill.  Yummmm!   I like them with mustard, pickle, lettuce, and tomato, and when I can get it, thousand island dressing.  Since I've been GFree for about 10 years the buns present a small problem.  Gluten free buns can be pretty vile, but not all is lost.  I found out last year that gluten free buns should be nuked for 20 seconds.  That gets the moisture back in them and they are much more pallettable.(edit) I also often use corn tortillas for buns.  They can be thrown directly on the grill for several seconds and come out semi-tasty.

I "finished" one of my Accurail box car kits today.  I say finished in quotes because I drilled holes in the brake pieces to run the brake lines.  In this case it would just be the two lines to and from the reservoir and one line to the cylinder.  We'll see how it turns out.

Less is more,...more or less!

I hate the idea of any hot food resting 10 minutes while the rest of the diners get off their cushions and make their way to the dining table.

I haven't had a good burger on the grill for a while now. How about fresh made burgers all around with as many toppings as you can fit on the bun? It's okay if you get your fingers sticky and spill some down your front. I like cheddar cheese, mayo, relish, mustard, lettuce and tomatoes. What's your craving?!?

I like mine with melted cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion and sometimes bacon.  And I like it RARE so it's moist enough so it doesn't need ketchup.

Something in the way of signals that hasn't been mentioned yet is hand signals:

I guess this crossing required some extra emphasis:

Inside view:

For some strange reason, I love dwarf signals:

I love these guys too:

This crossing looks like it could be a bit confusing:

Simple explanation:

Don't forget these guys:

I need to take some time to understand these types of signals:

Notice the different sizes of the lenses:

This is a 'fence' signal. I don't have a clue what it means. Anybody?

Here is another one:

Interesting shot:

"I can see clearly now...."

Seen better days:

That's all for now folks.

Cheers!!

Most were marble size but some were oval and about an inch long.

I have never seen hail any larger than 1/2" or so.

That is crazy.

Congrats Dave.

We had a major hail storm this afternoon.  Most were marble size but some were oval and about an inch long.

Good morning everyone. Chloe, I will take a thick slice of that fresh banana nut bread please.

-  -  -  -  -  -  -  -  -  -

My roof was supposed to be started today, but not all the supplies are available. The drip edge painted to match the roof did not arrive is what I was told. The roof is white metal, and we sell white drip edge at Home Depot...

Maybe the metal roof requires a different style drip edge? Oh well. Just two more weeks.

Dave: Congratulations. Having a grandchild is awesome. I am so glad my daughter moved back to Florida with mine. I hope yours lives close enough.

Good Morning,

A sunny day here, about 80F for a high.

Dave, congrats on the new arrival,

John, have fun on your trip. That is quite the gang going. I have only travelled with my wife.

Had some excitement here yesterday. Had an Indigo Bunting visit the yard. What a beautiful bird. We got some great photos including it having a bath in the pond. Later a racoon was cleaning up some bird seed on the circle and it was being stalked by a cat who the decided to have a confrontation with the racoon. We were able to put the garden hose in play and the cat ran off. It must have had a death wish. While the cat would be quick, racoons have far larger jaws and razor claws. The racoon was a smaller adult, not the very large male that sometimes comes around. If that cat tries for it, I think it would quickly be a goner.

Plans for today include cleaning the car interior, shampoo carpets, clean and treat the seats. The leather has no cracks or wear marks and I want to keep it that way. The car sure doesn't look like it is 13 years old. The paint is still very glossy.

My wife has hurt her back, likely lower back muscles. It has happened before. She should see a physio but is afraid due to covid. Everything is at a standstill in the yard

Good morning, everyone.

Mike, I probably would like to be in a cabin or tent somewhere, listening to the rain.  Of course, not the whole time I was there, like you did.

Kevin and Bear, I can't bring myself to like the combination of sweet and salty.  I've tried, but I usually wish the sweet part wasn't there.

Charlie, I'm almost packed and ready to go.  I leave tomorrow morning.  Including the grandkids, there are 15 of us flying into Munich.  We'll rent two vans there, see sights in southern Germany, then to Italy.  Once there, we ditch the vans and take trains everywhere else.  I'm sure the kids and grandkids will do well -- it's me I'm worried about.  There's lots of hiking involved.  My wife's not going, and she's seems completely happy with the idea that I won't be here for three weeks.

Ulrich lives on the other side of Germany from where we'll be, but I'll yell 'hello' out the window to him from everyone in the diner.

Someone didn't like a signal telling him to stop:

York1 John

I asked my doctor if I gave up delicious food and all alcohol, would I live longer?  He said, "No, but it will seem longer."

Thanks everyone for all the kind comments about us becoming grandparents. I still haven't quite got my head around the fact! Dianne was able to see the wee lad (Callum Glenn Warnica) on Sunday and she got to hold him. I declined to make the trip to the hospital because I couldn't possibly walk the distance from the parking lot to the maternity ward and I wouldn't ask Dianne to push the wheelchair that far. I'll see him soon enough.

Cheers!!

Hi Everyone,

Congratulations Dave.  You will have lots of delights and adventures ahead of you.  You can forget about your grandchild being quiet and they will sometimes be disobedient, but you do not have to put up with defiance.  Enjoy him.  He will bring you lots of joy.

John:  Wow!  That's some dispatch area.  They must have a huge layout! Whistling

Congratulations Dave!! Exciting news!

Sitting in a campground in the pouring rain right now. First day here. A few weeks ago we rented a cabin for four days and it rained every day. Now a three day camping trip and it's supposed to rain all three days. Both trips were scheduled back in February. There is a third we scheduled at the same time coming up. Wish us luck!

That is going to be a stretch for me because my past approach to young children is that they should be quiet and obedient.

You left out properly cooked.
