Part Source - Baggage Car Stirrup Steps
Posted by cnjman721 on Wednesday, May 24, 2023 2:55 PM

I need to repair some broken HO Heavyweight Baggage Car stirrup steps. They are 18 inches wide, rectangular, not tapered. They have a middle rung that's droppped slightly. They are side mounted to the car body and have bolt detail.

Its a CNJ car, so it could be Bethlehem Car Works. Could it be Bev-Bel, I don't know? Can't see any identifying brand name on the car's underframe to help guide me to a parts source. Trucks are plastic pinned Talgo type. I looked on eBay, Walthers.com and Bethlehem Car Works sites and don't see any matches. I often form grabs and stirrups from wire but these have compound curvature and side attachments have bolt detail, so I don't want to attempt that.

Does anyone know of a source for these?

Thanks,

Ed

Custom Finishing might have something you can use.  Their online catalog (page 5) in the "Steps, Ladders & Grabs" section lists both a #302 40 inch stirrup step for long doors and a #299 18" stirrup step for passenger cars.

The website is not clear about availability or how to order/buy, but there is an email address and a phone number.  Good luck.

Page 76 of the Precision Scale HO passenger and freight car catalog has a number of stirrups. You can download a PDF of their catalogs free.

Determining who made the car might help narrow the part you need down. If it has plastic Talgo trucks (trucks with coupler attached) it's quite likely Athearn. (An AHM or Rivarossi car would say "Rivarossi" on the bottom.) Maybe do a web search on "Athearn HO heavyweight baggage car" and check the images to see if it looks like what you have. (Note that if your car has one large door on the side instead of two, it would be the Railway Post Office car.)

Possibly another option https://www.activepowersports.com/

When I was a younger man, I did active power sports: motorcycles, snowmobiles, 4 wheelers, jet skis.  Has anyone seen MR stuff at a store selling any any of the above?

This outfit has been mentioned here and other forums.   Jim Cramer's warning applies "Don't Buy"

I crank-out those items by the dozen, but usually mount them in the bottom of the door sills.  I have done some using suitably-sized wire (which doubles as bolt heads for surface-mounted sill steps).

If you right-click on the photos, you'll get a larger image...

...here's the simple wooden jig that I use for making these brass sill steps...

My apologies if I've inadvertently posted duplicate photos.
