My 1980s Bachmann Niagara's Tender no longer derails!
Posted by philo426 on Thursday, February 16, 2023 5:45 PM

I had a persistent problem where the tender on my 1980s era Bachmann Niagara's Tender constantly derailed.I up graded it with Brass Samhongsa rear side frames and metal wheels .I solved the problem by cutting apart the 5 wheel rigid frame allowing independent movement of the rear wheels the second problem was the front tender truck that was very light and had way too much slop that caused constant derailment on my 22 inch test layout.I put metal wheels on but that did not fully solve the problem  I removed the stalk and put an aluminum tube around it and screwed it to a plastic plate, which I then glued to the frame .put it on the track and voila' the problem was solved !I am running a six unit train which consists of four Athearn box cars,a Union 76 tank car and a yellow Union Pacific caboose .The motor is cheesy ,looks like a slot car motor on it's side but the valve gear runs very smoothly.cool!

Since Bachman is coming out with a new NYC Hudson I wonder if they will upgrade the centipede tender and offer that version of the Hudson along with the six wheel truck version they will be doing ? --- Ken

I'm glad you fixed your tender issue. There's nothing like a bit of tinkering to fix a steamer and get it back to work.

Looking at your layout, I see that you are having a lot of fun... that's what it's all about in my books!

I had it running for almost an hour straight with a consist of seven Atherarn cars plus a couple of Model Diecasting Harriman Passenger cars and the derailment issue has been resolved
