Has anyone broke the hand rails on their well cars? I was thinking about making some new ones on my 3D printer

Hi Class5,
I have precious little knowledge of 3D printing, but I would ask how sturdy would 3D printed hand rails actually be if you are printing them on a hobby printer? When I need to make hand rails I use 0.0125" phosphor bronze wire from Tichy Trains. It bends easily, solders easily and will withstand lots of handling. If you need to make multiple copies of the same design, styrene (or wood jigs if you want to be able to solder joints) are easy to make up.

I'm just a dude with a bad back having a lot of fun with model trains, and finally building a layout!
It's possible that the OP is refering to the upright angle iron assembly that includes the hand grab:

I've seen plenty of these snapped off various models and plain bronze wire alone isn't a fix.
I could be wrong. The only well car on my layout houses a video camera...

If you a printer, go for it. I used to be able to find details parts on Ebay.
Plano also makes some stanchions in etched brass:

The upright posts appear to be simple angle irons which are readily available in brass from suppliers like K&S.

You're right.
